Did you know that since the UK GDPR over £10 million pounds in fines for schools and educational establishments have been issued.
Data safeguarding is as important as any other safeguarding and more work needs to be done to ensure schools act on that fact. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has audited compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) across over 360 schools and not one has reached an overall ‘excellent’ rating. The ICO audits assess schools in the key areas of governance and accountability, data sharing, training and awareness, and requests for personal data and portability. Across all of the reports, overall assurance ratings were ‘reasonable’ at best, with many schools receiving a ‘limited’ score. When GDPR was introduced in 2018, schools were initially praised for working diligently to introduce new practices to safeguard their information and protect their staff and students. The latest audits suggest that many are still struggling to understand what is required of them.
Examples of fines to date have included :
- schools who have sent information to former parents / pupils without consent
- undertaking staff surveys without advising how the data will be used and the right to be 'anonymised'
- retaining information on staff following a subject access request without notifying them that this has been done (in relation to safeguarding)
- not informing parents or staff of their data rights when they leave the school
- information being sent to the wrong person by email
- sending out emails to groups of parents and not using BCC
- lack of training for staff on email management, how to anonymise data, the difference between opinion and fact.
Our new one day course will cover :
- real life case studies and how to avoid them
- anonymisation
- what is personal data
- managing subject access requests (timescales, what to do and when)
- data breaches : what they are, when to refer to the ICO, protocols for managing them
- staff training : what should be included and what shouldn't - and for who
- using the ICO compliance checker to identify issues and concerns (incl. Occasional Staff Or Low Access Staff Policy And Approach)
- data management and staff appraisal
- data processing record of activity
- contracts and SLA's : new expectations
- data owners records and liabilities
- file retrieval guidance
- data minimisation and pseudonymisation policy and training
..... and much more
We work with over 30 schools providing GDPR support, training and DPO services. We have an excellent record of supporting these schools to minimise data issues and ensure compliance with UK GDPR and ICO expectations.
We will provide all participants with the required materials to roll out some of the training in your school and give you the policies and procedures information you will need. This one day could save your school a lot of time - and money.
